Dien Bien Phu city is located in Muong Thanh Valley with around 20km
long and 6km wide was established in the middle of the 19th century. For
a long time, Dien Bien Phu has a border with Laos and China so it is a
point of cultural and economic exchange between people in the border
area of these countries. Business people from all the countries such as
Laos, Myanmar and China come here for trading. From Dien Bien, all kinds
of commodities are transported through Tay Trang border gate to Laos,
Thailand to exchange for consumer’s goods to supply Hanoi and North West
provinces.
Dien Bien Phu is also famous because of a battlefield
that lasted 56 days between French troops and Vietnam communists in 1954
and led to the fall of French colonism in Indochina. One of historical
sites left until today is A1 hill, the main battle area of the war that
now becomes the most attractive place when visitor doing Vietnam motorcycle travel to Dien Bien,
especially French tourists.
The historcal complex covering a large area is located at Muong Phang
ward, 30km from Dien Bien city. Almost everyday, a lot of former
Vietnamese soldiers came here to have a look back on their bloody and
heroic youth.
